Abstract

The concept of focal infection is instrumental in helping to bring together the dentist and the physician in treating patients.
The possible mechanism of focal infection includes:
1. The infectious agent in the primary focus may be carried to the distant site by the lymphatics or blood stream.
2. The infectious agent may remain at the primary focus, and liberated toxins may be transported to the distant site.
3. The disease process at the distant site may represent a hypersensitivity response to antigenic properties of the infectious agent.
The diseases that may be produced by an oral focus of infection are: 1. Valvular heart diseases, especially subacute bacterial endocarditis.
2. Arthritis, especially rheumatoid and rheumatic fever types.
3. Ocular diseases.
4. Gastrointestinal diseases.
5. Osteomyelitis,. hematogenous.
6. Skin diseases.
7. Renal diseases.
